How much more does a balcony cabin cost than an inside cabin?

Last updated · figures from the Monday load of · published 2026-10-03

TL;DR

A balcony cabin costs a median 37.1% more than an inside cabin on the same sailing, about $390 per sailing or $56 a night, across 23,182 sailings that list both lead-in fares in our 2026-09-28 snapshot. The premium ranges from 11.8% at Aurora Expeditions to 80.3% at Celestyal Cruises.

A balcony usually adds about a third to the fare of an inside cabin. Cruise Itinerary compared the inside and balcony lead-in fares of every future sailing in its register on 2026-09-28, 61,010 sailings across 43 cruise lines, and kept the 23,182 sailings that list both. The figures are weekly snapshots of advertised lead-in fares, not live quotes for a particular cabin.

How much more is a balcony than an inside cabin?

On a typical sailing, the balcony lead-in fare is 37.1% above the inside lead-in fare: a median of $1,523 against $1,087, a difference of $390 per sailing or $56 a night. That median covers 23,182 sailings from 19 cruise lines that listed both fares in the Monday load of 2026-09-28.

Medians are used throughout because a few long expedition voyages with five-figure fares would dominate an average. On 95 of the 23,182 sailings the balcony fare was no higher than the inside fare. Lead-in fares do that when the cheapest inside category has sold out, leaving a pricier one as the lead-in, or when a line runs a balcony promotion; the feed does not say which.

The percentage is the number to use when comparing lines. The dollar gap grows with the length and price of the cruise, so a 30% premium on a 14-night Holland America Line voyage is a much larger sum than the same premium on a 3-night Carnival Cruise Line sailing from Miami.

Which cruise lines charge the biggest balcony premium?

Celestyal Cruises charges the largest median balcony premium among lines with at least 100 comparable sailings, 80.3% over its inside fare. Aurora Expeditions charges the smallest, 11.8%. MSC Cruises, the line with the most comparable sailings, sits at 32.7%, and Carnival Cruise Line at 56.4%.

The premium does not track how expensive a line is. Carnival Cruise Line has a median inside fare of $540 and a premium of 56.4%; Oceania Cruises has a median inside fare of $3,952 and a premium of 48.6%. Royal Caribbean adds a median $224 a sailing, or 29.8%. Aurora Expeditions and Uniworld River Cruises sit apart: their fare categories are mapped to inside and balcony by the supplier, and their cabins differ from an ocean ship's.

Does the balcony premium grow on longer cruises?

The balcony premium rises with cruise length in our data. On sailings of 2–5 nights, the median balcony fare is 36.6% above inside, or $197; on sailings of 15+ nights it is 42.0%, or $1,450. Fares on longer voyages are higher overall, so the dollar gap grows faster than the percentage.

  • 2–5 nights: median premium 36.6%, or $197 a sailing and $50 a night, over 5,218 sailings
  • 6–9 nights: median premium 34.9%, or $380 a sailing and $53 a night, over 12,635 sailings
  • 10–14 nights: median premium 42.5%, or $890 a sailing and $71 a night, over 3,710 sailings
  • 15+ nights: median premium 42.0%, or $1,450 a sailing and $66 a night, over 1,603 sailings

Per night, the gap is steadier than per sailing. That is the figure to use when weighing a balcony on a short cruise against one on a long voyage.

Which cruise lines sell no inside cabins at all?

19 of the 43 cruise lines in our register listed no inside fare on any future sailing in the load of 2026-09-28, covering 17,095 sailings. Most are river, expedition, yacht or luxury lines. With no inside fare in the feed, an inside-versus-balcony comparison cannot be made for any of them.

  • Avalon Waterways (3,779 sailings)
  • AmaWaterways (3,199 sailings)
  • Viking Ocean Cruises (2,372 sailings)
  • Windstar Cruises (1,106 sailings)
  • Scenic (1,074 sailings)
  • Silversea (1,013 sailings)
  • Seabourn (828 sailings)
  • Ponant Cruises (698 sailings)
  • American Cruise Lines (696 sailings)
  • Explora Journeys (650 sailings)
  • Regent Seven Seas Cruises (615 sailings)
  • The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection (266 sailings)
  • Crystal (238 sailings)
  • Star Clippers (213 sailings)
  • Atlas Ocean Voyages (156 sailings)
  • Paul Gauguin Cruises (82 sailings)
  • Vidanta World (57 sailings)
  • Victory Cruise Lines (47 sailings)
  • Tauck River Cruises (6 sailings)

Some of these lines still list a balcony fare, and Viking Ocean Cruises lists one on most sailings, but with no inside fare there is nothing to compare it against. They are excluded from every figure above.

How were these balcony and inside fares measured?

Every figure here compares the inside and balcony lead-in fares of the same sailing, captured in the Monday load of 2026-09-28. Of 61,010 future sailings, 30,074 listed an inside fare, 35,720 a balcony fare and 23,182 both. Sailings missing either fare were excluded, 37,828 in all.

  • A lead-in fare is the lowest advertised fare in a cabin category, as the supplier feed lists it. The feed does not say whether it is per person or whether taxes and port fees are included, so neither is assumed here. Both fares on a sailing come from the same listing.
  • A missing fare means the category is not offered or is sold out; the feed does not say which.
  • Fares are weekly snapshots, refreshed each Monday, and are not live bookable prices. Cabin categories are as the supplier maps them; see ship cabin types for what the terms usually mean.

Every sailing in the comparison, with all four cabin fares and their weekly history, is available through the Cruise Itinerary API.

  • Celestyal Cruises has the largest premium (80.3%) and Aurora Expeditions the smallest (11.8%) among lines with enough comparable sailings.
  • The premium rises with length, from 36.6% on sailings of 2–5 nights to 42.0% on voyages of 15+ nights.
  • 19 lines, mostly river, expedition and luxury, list no inside fare at all, so the comparison does not apply to them.
  • All figures are lead-in fares from a weekly Monday snapshot, not live quotes for a specific cabin.

Frequently asked questions

Is a balcony cabin worth the extra cost?

That depends on how much time you spend in the cabin, but the price side is measurable. In our 2026-09-28 snapshot the median balcony premium was $56 a night over an inside cabin on the same sailing. On a seven-night cruise that is roughly $392, before any difference in taxes or fees.

Which cruise line has the cheapest balcony upgrade?

Among lines with at least 100 sailings listing both fares, Aurora Expeditions has the smallest median premium at 11.8%, and Celestyal Cruises the largest at 80.3%. In dollars, Royal Caribbean has the smallest median gap per night at $41. Check the table above, since the ranking shifts as lines reprice each week.

Why is the balcony sometimes cheaper than an inside cabin?

On 95 of 23,182 sailings in our snapshot, the balcony lead-in fare was no higher than the inside one. Two things can cause it: the cheapest inside category may have sold out, leaving a pricier one as the lead-in fare, or the line may be running a balcony promotion. The feed does not say which.

Are these prices per person?

The supplier feed does not say, so we do not claim it. Cruise fares are usually advertised per person based on two sharing a cabin, but we have not verified that for every line. The comparison holds either way, because the inside and balcony fares on a sailing come from the same listing.

How often is this balcony price comparison updated?

Every Monday. Cruise Itinerary loads every future sailing's fares each week, and this page recomputes the medians from the latest load, so the snapshot date shown at the top is the date the fares were captured. Fare history back to 2026-09-06 is available through the API.
