Why do expedition and river cruises cost more per night?
Expedition and river ships carry tens or a few hundred passengers rather than thousands, and their fares usually include excursions, drinks and guides that ocean lines sell separately. Spread over fewer berths, the cost per night is higher, which lifts regions such as Antarctica and the South Pacific.
